Bābū Gōpī Nātẖ is one of Manto’s epic characters. Through him the writer studies the gradual purging and transcendence of the human soul. The character, in spite of a decadent, socially unacceptable style of living goes through stages of disciplining, trains his inner self and eventually acquires a state of nirvana. This essay studies Gopi Nātẖ’s character, which, according to the author, epitomizes Manto’s belief in human goodness.
